The Truth about Bananas

Curved, freckled and  yellow – here's the truth about one of the most desired (ranks number two in Germany and three in the U.S.), yet most misunderstood fruits in the world: BANANAS.

The yellow calorie monster?

Here's my banana story: I really love them, but everytime I have one, there's this voice in the back of my head telling me, how bananas will only make me gain weight. Have you heard that before as well?
It seems like a lot of people believe in this myth (I base this assumption on my recent google search).

So today I wanted to finally unravel the mystery and find the truth. Here's my discovery:

There's no need to beat around the bush, so let's get this out of the way right now: Bananas have more calories than most other fruits. Bananas have about 90 calories per 100 gramms, which is about 115 calroies per banana. You can basically have two apples to eat the same amount of calories.

Sie besitzen ca. 90 Kalorien pro 100 Gramm, was in etwa 115 Kalorien pro Banane entspricht.

Now if you look at your daily calorie intake, which should be somewhere around 1.900 to 2.500 calroies depending on your weight, age and gender – this is not a lot.
Yes, if you add bananas to a diet that's already around its 2.000 calories – yes, then you will obiously gain weight. But that happens with any other type of food as well: Eating more than you need will make you eventually gain weight.
I'm guessing people have this wrong perception about this yellow fruit, just because it ranks very high calorie-wise.

Now that we've gotten this out of the way, let's get to the fun part: WHAT MAKES BANANAS SO GRET FOR YOU.

Calorie Bomb or Healthy Snack?

So what's the advantage of bananas having more calories? – They are more filling and keep you from craving candy and chocolate, since ripe bananas are very sweet.
They also have lots of fibers, which are good for your stomach and they can be easily digested.

Bananas contain a bunch of vitamins as well, even if they're far from being a superfood in that category. However, they are high in magnesium and potassium. Both of these dietary minerals are important for your muscles and nerves.
And: Bananas basically don't have any fat (0.2 gramms/ 0.07 oz per 100 gramms/ 3.5 oz). This makes them the perfect snack before or after any workout.

You see, there's nothing bad about bananas. In general, no fruits or veggies are bad for you – they are the best you can do for you body.
So don't just say no to a banana because it ranks high in calories.
A candy bar has around 200 calories – and how much nutrients? Stick to mother nature, and you'll be fit and healthy.
